Kenya with children

A safari the children actually enjoy

The honest bit

We will tell you if they are too young

Most family safari pages are relentlessly encouraging. We would rather be useful.

Under about four, a classic multi-park safari is hard work for everybody, and a lot of money to spend on a trip nobody will remember. There are ways to do it well (a conservancy, a private house, short drives, a pool) and we will plan them. But if you ask us whether to wait, we will give you a straight answer.

  • Camps set minimum ages for real safety reasons. We work with them, not around them dishonestly
  • A private vehicle usually removes the age limit, and transforms the days
  • Two nights per camp with young children; three feels like four
  • Laikipia and Ol Pejeta before the Mara, almost always

The shape that works

Three rules we rarely break

Fly, do not drive

Adults tolerate a five-hour transfer. Children do not, and neither will you by hour three.

Two nights, then move

With under-tens, two nights per camp. Long enough to settle, short enough to stay interested.

End at the beach

A week of dawn starts then four days in warm shallow water. Nobody has ever regretted this order.

Before you ask

The questions we get most

What is the minimum age for a safari?

There is no legal minimum. Individual camps set their own, commonly around six or eight and sometimes twelve, and it applies to game drives as well as to staying.

A private vehicle usually removes the restriction, because the concern is largely about other guests. Family units and exclusive-use houses do the same.

Is it safe for children?

The safari itself is well managed. You stay in the vehicle, camps escort you to your tent after dark, and guides are experienced with families.

The real considerations are ordinary ones: sun, dehydration, long transfers and malaria prophylaxis. All are manageable, and all need planning rather than optimism.

Will they be bored in the vehicle?

Sometimes, yes. Three hours is a long time. What fixes it: their own binoculars (not shared), a job (spotter, list-keeper, photographer) and a guide who talks to them rather than over them.

Ask for a guide who is good with children explicitly. The difference is enormous and it costs nothing.

Should we do the Masai Mara?

With children over about eight, yes, the sheer density of animals means something is always happening, which matters more with children than with adults. Under eight, we would usually start with Laikipia or Ol Pejeta: shorter drives, cooler, and more to do out of the vehicle.

Who actually arranges my safari?

This site is a planning guide. When you send an enquiry it goes to Nomad Africa, our partner travel agency in Kenya, who prepare your itinerary and quote and handle the booking, the payments and you on the ground.

You deal with one team from the first email to the airport transfer home.

It is the first thing we need and the thing that changes everything else. We will only suggest camps that will actually take them, and we will say plainly if we think a child is too young for the trip you are describing.

Our Kenya specialist replies within 24 hours.

  • Only camps that will genuinely take your children’s ages
  • Drive times stated honestly, and flights where they are worth it
  • Family units and interconnecting rooms identified
